How to find us and other info

Upper Gorwell House, Goodleigh Road, Barnstaple EX32 7JP

                                 Telephone 01271-267091        e-mail: artavianjohn@gmail.com

We are due east and about 0.8 miles from Barnstaple centre along Bear Street which becomes Goodleigh Road further up the hill.

FROM M5

1. Take North Devon link road A361  and go all the way to the outskirts of Barnstaple.

2. At the enormous roundabout, take Right lane and go towards Barnstaple centre.

  1. 3.Follow signs to Lynton A39 and Ilfracombe A361 going through several roundabouts.

  2. 4. Pedestrian lights and then there is a right hand turn lane at the next lights. Turn right here up the hill (signed Goodleigh & Bratton Fleming)

5. Past Gorwell Road which comes in on the left by some new yellow and black painted blocks of flats, there are two bungalows, and then two lodge houses with railings on the left. (If you get to ‘The Close’ on left, you have gone just too far.)

6. Go between these lodge houses and down our long drive to the end. Here you take the right fork, signed ‘Little Gorwell House & Upper Gorwell House’. There is a steep climb round the side of the upper house which leads into the walled garden where you start the tour of the garden.

Parking will now be along all the verges on the left hand side of the drive as you approach the house.

There will no longer be access to the old house.

You are also welcome to contact me about group visits (preferably 10 or more) outside these Open Days.

We have sold the old house - having lived in it for almost 42 years -  and have moved into the upper (back) part of the main house. The name of our new house is UPPER GORWELL HOUSE so you will need to enter this in the NGS website’s ‘find a garden’ search facility.

Garden access will be a bit more difficult than before.

The new entrance to the garden will be to the very right of the upper part of the old house, around the side and will be signposted. There is quite a steep asphalt ramp up to the garden entrance, so a strong assistant could push a wheelchair up!  There will no longer be access to the main house as in the past. PARKING is on the verges which have been cleared on the left of the drive as you approach the house and next to the hedge below the new house. Please park as ‘tidily’ as possible - nose or tail in - to make room for as many cars as possible, and to allow room for cars to come and go.
